Assassinations are not unique to the history of the United States. Some of the earliest recorded histories concern themselves with the murder of the powerful and famous. In the context of the “American Dream” however, assassinations become something entirely different. All sins and foibles of the attacked or killed are immediately forgotten. Most of all, the assassin (or would-be assassin) is turned into legend by the storytellers and folksingers of past centuries or by the modern media. Is the American public’s fascination with assassins acting as an open invitation to the fringe of society to take potshots at our leaders? Why does the act itself become legend while the actual intent of the assassin forgotten? Can serious questions like these be raised by an entertaining and comedic musical? They can if tackled by Stephen Sondheim. “Assassins” is a one-act musical that reveals some uneasy truths about American society by looking at history through the eyes of nine of the individuals who attempted to kill a president. The imaginative book by John Weidman and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim are sometimes shocking, sometimes funny, and always thought-provoking.
